Good evening, dear diligent readers of this mediocre blog. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this.
This blog comes to you from the wonderful land that is the US and A, as I am currently on an academic exchange to the California Institute of the Arts, LA, and have been since mid January of this year. With 4 weeks to go, and a master carp position to do, this blog is going to be a lot more active in the near future, so watch this space.
Well, what can I say, its been an amazing few months. Firstly, thank you Uncle Steve for pushing me to do this exchange when I was thinking of backing out due to what I’d miss at the Academy. I have no regrets about coming here, and I highly recommend doing an exchange if you, reader, get the opportunity to do the same.
I came to CalArts with high hopes and an excitement towards what I might learn, and although 1 semester is not long enough to get fully into some subjects and get to the level I might have liked to achieve, or some classes not being exactly what I thought they might, I have certainly learned lots. Probably more than I would have at the Academy, too. There are many things I want to take back and use at the Academy, many personal skills I have picked up and would like to use as a TSM in my third year. I have also really valued getting to experience to course in two institutions, and observing their differences. Sure, its all too easy to complain about the Academy. I certainly have in the past, but I realise now each place and each course has its pros and cons, and that we have to make the most of what we have available. I know I’m going to do that when I return. I guess paying $40k a year really lights a fire under your arse; a luxury we don’t have back home.
I am really looking forward to taking on a master carp position for the CalArts graduation ceremony. My first time in any sort of management role, I really don’t want to cock it up. Hopefully I can take what I learn here and apply it to my management roles in the Academy. People have said in the past that I’m a good team leader, but in actual fact I’m continuously screaming in confusion on the inside. Please interperate from this clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbf0BCex99I), between 00:14 and 00:21. Just takes practise, I guess.
Anyway, I’ll no post up more of my thoughts, musings, observations, anecdotes, feelings, impressions, digital media and such soon.
‘Till next time, God speed. x
